C4 Progress Report III

       Many new things have been going on with the C4 program recently and we thought it would be an appropriate time to bring you up to speed. As most of you know, The Flight Design C4, the new advanced four-place GA aircraft, achieved its first flight on April 9th 2015 at Kamenz airfield (EDCM) in Kamenz, Germany.  The successful test flight was performed by Damian Hischier an FAA and EASA approved test pilot living in Switzerland.     The flight lasted one hour and the C4 was tested for basic handling, longitudinal trim, spiral stability in 20 and 30 degree banks, approach to stall and practice go–arounds. Flight Design Success in Public Service

    While its aircraft have become well known to pilots in the USA and worldwide, a quiet corner of the manufacturing business has been growing. Flight Design Completed First Flight of New C4

    Last fall, Flight Design GmbH, manufacturer of the popular CT-series of Light-Sport Aircraft, promised to fly its new, certified four seater called C4 by the opening of the Aero Friedrichshafen show. On Friday, April 9th, the development team achieved their goal. The weekend was spent reviewing initial results (see below) and preparing to set up at the event that start April 15th.    “The C4 really performed as expected,” reported Tom Peghiny, President of Flight Design USA, importer of the German company’s products and test flight director for the C4 development. Peghiny flew alongside the C4 non-conforming prototype. “It appeared and test pilot Damian Hischier confirmed that the C4 is stable about all axes.” Hischier also reported, “The spiral stability of C4 is good and its directional stability is good.” While…

C4 to Start Final Tests with Continental Motors

       Continental Motors recently announced FAA Type Certification of its new alternative fuel powerplant, IO-360-AF. This success encouraged Flight Design to move its test article C4 from the fabrication plant to its German headquarters in Kamenz where it will undergo final tests leading to first flight of the new design.        Flight Design’s senior engineering staff is based in Kamenz, Germany lead by Technical Director Oliver Reinhardt and C4 Project Lead Engineer Artem Izokh. Along with technicians, the engineers will launch final evaluations including a ground vibration test. This method, commonly used by sailplane manufacturers who were early to embrace composite structures, allows verification of characteristics like control surface stability. Flight Design Team Visits Continental Motors

  Light-Sport Aircraft market leader Flight Design is nearly ready to fly its new four seat C4 aircraft and in final preparation sent a team to Continental Motors manufacturing facility in Mobile, Alabama. The two companies have been working closely on the project.    The Flight Design team, led by Flight Design USA Director of Maintenance Dave Armando, was joined by Engine Group Leader, Franz Karnecki of Flight Design’s base in Kamenz, Germany; C4 Project Lead Engineer Artem Izokh; and, independent consultant John Hurst. This week Flight Design is actively participating at annual Oshkosh AirVenture event  running in USA.  The attendance at our booth for visitors started Sunday before the show even opened on Monday. The Flight Design  press conference was on Tuesday the 29th. Sunday August 3th will be the last day. At the AirVenture 2014 press conference, that was well attended by interested media, LSA market leader Flight Design unveiled news about the newest CTLSi Light-Sport Aircraft with the Garmin G3X, called the Vision Touch for the CTLS series.  The Flight Design C4, the advanced, four-place GA aircraft currently in development by Flight Design has seen substantial progress this Spring, culminating in exciting announcements during displays at Sun‘n Fun and Aero Friedrichshafen.  The Flight Design Vision Touch   At Sun‘n Fun Flight Design announced the Vision Touch Avionics suite at its annual press-conference with the complete system on display in the C4 interior mock up. The Vision Touch suite is based around the Garmin G3X Touch ® system as PFD and MFD (Primary and Multifunction Displays). The G3X Touch is a new product offering from Garmin that features both advanced synthetic vision capabilities and a choice of touch screen and conventional button/knob input as well.
